Council votes for city to maintain new skatepark
By ERICKA SCHENCK SMITH of the Missoulian

Skateboarders can claim one more small victory in their quest for a place to play.

On Monday, the City Council agreed to take over a new skatepark - and about $10,000 a year in maintenance costs - once the Missoula Skateboard Association pays to build it. Construction of the skatepark at McCormick Park is expected to cost about $320,000.

"It's a large sum," said the association's Chris Bacon. "It's going to be a challenge, but I don't think it's impossible."

Pearl Jam has already donated $50,000 to the cause, and the association will go to the Missoula Redevelopment Agency on Wednesday for approval of a $150,000 matching grant. A benefit screening of new snowboard films at the Crystal Theatre next Wednesday will help, too.

And from there, Bacon said, it's up to boarders - and their parents - to pitch in.

"It's going to be an amazing place to go," Bacon said of tentative designs for the new park.

Before the council's unanimous vote Monday, Missoula Parks and Recreation Director Donna Gaukler said the skatepark is "something much needed in Missoula."

Afterward, Ross Peterson thanked the council, saying Missoula boarders have worked hard to come up with a proposal everyone can agree on.

"You're welcome, Mr. Peterson," came the response from Mayor Mike Kadas. "Good luck raising the rest of the money."

The council also voted unanimously Monday to accept a number of bids for new city vehicles, totalling $345,345.
