On Deck Auction not the usual grind
By JAMIE KELLY of the Missoulian

Jeff Ament’s “I Come in Peace,” featured at the On Deck Auction and Show on Friday at the Raven Cafe, 4 p.m.
Downtown will likely be stuffed to the hilt with First Friday revelers, as the Rolling Stones holdouts will be looking for some fun Missoula nightlife.

They (and you) might start at the Raven Cafe at 4 p.m., where the On Deck Art Auction gets under way, the last big fundraising hoorah for the Missoula Skatepark Association.

This wholly unique show and auction features 85 painted up, buffed out and carved skateboards from some of the area's best-known artists, including Lane Timothy and Hadley Ferguson. This year as well features a board by Pearl Jam bass player Jeff Ament, a big contributor of both time, money and energy to Mobash. (Ament's “I Come in Peace” is currently commanding the top price).

Many of the boards already have bids placed on them during the online auction portion of the event; Friday begins the final, live auction leg. Don't miss it.

Be sure also to catch a very curious show that's already, according to the artist, caused somewhat of a controversy among viewers.

Photographer Sam Manno's “from the 7th of May,” hanging in Gallery Saintonge at 216 N. Higgins, features what some have found to be disturbing images.

Included in his show is a photo of two young boys with BB guns, running through the woods, gleefully looking for the birds they just killed.

Combined with photos of the old rendering plant behind Wal-Mart, Manno's photographs “lead us into worlds that we'd rather not acknowledge,” pondering beauty in “a place of shadow and nightmare,” according to his press materials.

Judge for yourself at the reception from 5-8 p.m.

Not comfortable with that show? Manno has a second at Butterfly Herbs, 232 N. Higgins, titled “Photographs: 1978-2002,” also opening Friday. The image Manno sent us of his niece in Greenough Park is both striking and somewhat unsettling.

Over at the Ceretana, on the good side of the tracks, is the third-annual Founders Show, featuring the work of all of the gallery's founders (with a couple of others thrown in), including Steve “Gus” Gustason, Roger Merrill, David Peterson, Sandy Lawler, Gayl Teichart, Jim Hewes, Kim Shirley and Will Schliefer. Reception for that show is from 5-9 p.m. And they have wine there. Lots of wine.
