Eddie Shaw is the real deal - a Chicago musician whose resume reads like a chronicle of that storied city's blues history. This is a guy who has arranged music for Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters, and who has played in bands with musical giants such as Ike Turner, Howlin' Wolf and George Thorogood. That Shaw has succeeded so completely in a town where blues is defined by harmonicas and guitars is even greater testament to his brilliance.
Thorogood himself recently said, “being around Eddie Shaw is one of the most spiritual things you can experience. The man has such an incredible presence and is so full of life and positive energy, you can't help but feel it. And when it comes to the saxophone, this man is a true living legend.”
With about a gazillion recordings to his credit, including nine albums marketed under his own name, Shaw has influenced a generation of players and fans. Now, he and his band, the Wolf Gang, will be swinging through the Top Hat in Missoula, for a performance this Saturday evening, Sept. 15.
It's an early show - start time is 7 p.m. - and note that it's a nonsmoking event (a rarity for the Top Hat). Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door.
- Joe Nickell, Missoulian
