UM percussionists get their holiday groove
By JAMIE KELLY of the Missoulian

Looking to shake off that turkey ennui and get back in your groove? Then 16 University of Montana drummers have got your answer.

Fresh off a tour of Montana, the UM Percussion Ensemble and the Islanders Steel Drum Band are taking their sticks and mallets home for a winter concert on Nov. 27 in the University Theatre.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Not only that, but the West African Drum Ensemble and the UM Indoor Drumline will also join the other two groups under the direction of UM percussion professor Robert Ledbetter.

As usual with Ledbetter’s concerts, the styles, substance, rhythms and tempos are as varied as can be.

The music includes compositions by Pulitzer Prize-winner Christopher Roust and vibraphonist David Samuels, performed by the UM Percussion Ensemble.

Following that, the West African Drum Ensemble features a composition of traditional Guinean yankadi and macru rhythms.

The UM Indoor Drumline is next with “Starfish” by Brazilian jazz artist and percussionist Airto Moreira

And the entire second half of the program is taken up by the Islanders Steel Drum Band, the most elite drum group on campus.

Compositions include “Pan on de Ground” by Gary Gibson, “Move it on Up” by Airto Moreira, “Summer Song” by Cliff Alexis and “Mambo Mindoro” by Cal Tjader.

Tickets to the show are $6 general, $4 students and seniors. Call 243-6880 for more information.
