We’ve all been there: stuck at work with plans for a big night on the town, with no opportunity to go home and change. Maybe you’re a professional woman who wants to unbutton a little in the evening hours. Then again, you could be a woman who can dress casually on the clock, but wants to ratchet up your style for a night out. Either way, if you have five minutes you can make five simple changes that will fabulously transition your look from day to evening.

Cover up

You have so many options to change your outer layer. Trade your blazer for a jean jacket, or your jean jacket for a blazer. A leather bomber jacket, embellished cardigan, silk kimono top, or sleeveless trench will transform your entire day. Match your cover-up to the event you are attending and get after it.

If your hair has been up all day, try a loose side braid, or pin the ends under for a fake bob. If you’ve been wearing your hair down and want something a little more dressy, try switching your part for more volume. A spritz of dry shampoo at the roots can do wonders to revive drooping hair. Bobby pin or slick your bangs back. Try an imperfect chignon. For shorter hair, use bobby pins to tame the sides or give yourself a faux hawk. Don’t worry about turning out a flawless hairstyle. Looking ever so slightly undone is very chic.

This is definitely a less is more category. You don’t need to rebuild an entire visage, from the foundation up. Not only is it time consuming, but it’s unflattering too. Use blotting paper or translucent powder if you have excessive shine. Remember, a little end of day dewiness is preferable to a dull, matte complexion. Apply or re-apply a coat of mascara. Eye drops can do wonders for tired eyes. Dab on some bright lipstick or gloss with your fingers for a natural look. You can even press a bit of the residue onto the apples of your cheeks to get a slight glow.

Don’t go overboard. Pick one area to accentuate. A chunky necklace or beautiful scarf can transform a neckline. Choose chandelier earrings to show off your jawline or collar bones. An arm full of bracelets, or one carefully chosen dazzler, will remind you all evening that you’re a woman of style.

The age old debate of looking good or feeling good is over. At least for this season. Towering stilettos may still be worn on Jersey Shore, but the rest of the fashion world has moved on. Never have women had so many beautiful options in flats, oxfords, loafers, square-heeled pumps, mid-heel booties, and all manner of knee-high boots. Calf hair, patent leather, brocade, velvet, jewel tones, color blocked, studded, Mein Gott! If you can imagine it, someone is manufacturing it. So let your shoes do the heavy lifting. Great shoes can make your whole outfit. Go get ‘em tiger!
