A body found under suspicious circumstances in south Helena Friday is so badly decomposed that officials say they will probably need dental records to identify it.
Lewis and Clark County Coroner Bryan Backeberg said Tuesday the process will “delay us in trying to identify the person.”
Two hikers found the body Friday east of Main Street, south of the Federal building.
“The condition suggested they had been there for quite some time,” Backeberg said.
“When we determine the identity, the investigation will take a different direction,” Backeberg said. “There are questions still, how they got there and how they died.”
The body remains at the Montana Crime Lab in Missoula, where further investigation is underway.
