Dan’s Soup and San, a popular restaurant in the Paxson Plaza near Southgate Mall, abruptly announced that it was closing permanently on Tuesday via a short Facebook post.

“Dan’s would like to thank our loyal customers for your patronage over the last eight years,” the post read. “Due to unforeseen circumstances we have decided to close our doors permanently. God bless you all and we love you Missoula.”

The post was signed “Dan, Jan and the staff” and didn’t elaborate further.

Dan’s was located at 2700 Paxson Street and featured cold subs and a daily selection of homemade soups like split pea.

On Tuesday, crews were moving inventory out of the restaurant and there was a closed sign on the door.

A phone number at the restaurant was busy all day.

The entire Paxson Plaza where Dan’s was located was purchased by Southgate Mall Associates last year as the mall is in the process of a $64 million redevelopment and expansion project. The mall is financing part of a new connector route from Brooks Street through its property, which will eventually connect to Mary Avenue across the railroad tracks. Construction is set to begin this year on a new nine-screen, dine-in Carmike theatre. The project also calls for a retail lifestyle center and new buildings for as-yet unnamed tenants. The old Sears store will be renovated for a planned grocery store and other retail tenants, and there will be a new retail addition on the east side of the Bob Ward and Sons building. The entire north portion of Paxson Plaza, where Dan's was located, will be demolished.

Last year, another longtime restaurant, Curley’s Broiler, closed its doors as part of the new development plans.

The Facebook post by Dan’s elicited nearly 200 comments within hours after it went up, with many expressing sadness at the eatery’s closure.

“Thank you so much for all the lunches,” said commenter Scott Ammons. “If your doors ever reopen somewhere new my wife Randi and I will be sure to be there.”

The restaurant won the Missoulian’s voter-driven “Missoula’s Choice” for best sandwich and best soup this year.
