Ex-Mineral County juvenile probation officer jailed in child sex sting

2014-01-09T06:00:00Z 2014-01-22T13:38:12Z Ex-Mineral County juvenile probation officer jailed in child sex sting missoulian.com

One of seven suspects arrested in a child sex sting operation worked as the juvenile probation officer in Mineral County and as a sheriff’s deputy in California, the Missoula County Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

James Stewart Myers was taken into custody Dec. 18 after he allegedly gave $100 to an undercover detective as pre-payment for a sexual encounter with a 12-year-old girl, during a sex-sting operation led by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Glen Welch, who oversees both Missoula and Mineral counties’ juvenile probation officers, said Myers worked in the office for about seven years before retiring about six months ago. Now the office is “investigating to make sure there haven’t been prior problems with the kids up there,” Welch said.

He also said Myers was a good employee while he worked for the state, but refused to comment further about the ongoing investigation.

A representative from the San Bernardino County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Myers worked there prior to his employment in Montana, but declined to comment further due to personnel privacy issues.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Jason Marks also declined to comment on the specifics of the case.

“To my knowledge, at this point there is nothing that would lead to additional charges,” Marks said.

During the sex sting, law enforcement officers posted advertisements on Backpage and Craigslist purporting to be a woman willing to make her 12-year-old relative available for sexual encounters.

Myers was one of seven people who allegedly made arrangements to have such an encounter with the child and traveled to the address used by undercover officers. According to the affidavit, Myers was given a choice of a 12-year-old girl or a 15-year-old girl, and chose the 12-year-old upon his arrival.

Myers appeared in Justice Court on Dec. 20 after he was released from the Missoula County jail on $50,000 bail. His arraignment on a felony child sex abuse charge is set for Jan. 21 at 9:45 a.m. before Missoula County District Judge Karen Townsend.

The sting was a joint operation between the Missoula Police Department, Missoula County Sheriff’s Department and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Department.

I have to take any ICAC investigation with a grain of salt particularly when they are sting investigations. A task force's federal funding is dependent on making arrests and they will do whatever is necessary to keep the money flowing. http://www.wkrg.com/story/24369062/sex-sting-backlash

Correction to my comment below. As to subject #5 it was my understanding
that the female was the mother of the "juvenile" were I read this or heard
this I cannot remember. In fact the female is the wife or girlfriend of one
    of the other subjects.

feeling based interrogations: The result false conviction or actual guilty or acquitted? A true interrogator goes in with open mind and then takes steps on verifying facts. An good interrogator must remain objective and not just follow feelings (owned by them only). May have assumptions or suspicions ,but not just feelings. I would think that the investigators are law enforcement, not child protective specialist. (CPS: pandering surreptitious solo cesspool) Investigators look for: a extra privilege given. As the story goes, long ago, a youth, to avoid being approached by a fat long haired blonde in clogs known to sport a sloppy bun , the dark haired elusive shrew with impaling look and many bards from various places presenting feelings: the skeletons in their closets. Personal feelings given by those with plausible status steals confidence, freedom and peace. Easily stated as give a idiot a little bit power all you have is a idiot with a little bit of power. The cesspool: using unattributable feeling, verbal candor and credential, schools employees, healthcare employees, public employees.Employed through tax based means in our communities some take those credentials work in other states achieve certification from credentials ,some through tax based means transfer through a department others will work in the private sector..

leftwingistherightwing, No actually I have no personal stake in the issue nor anyone I know never mind close to me. There are so many examples but I will only use two more recent. For one the article mentioned here. No sex was committed, nor will we ever know if any would have been committed; in fact there was never a victim. These poor “clowns” will be labeled sex offenders for the rest of their lives with their addresses listed in public view (which is a huge security issue) and all they ever did was have a thought - possibly (thought police). The second example, is a young man here in Missoula had in his browser window only the words “teen sex”, he had never actually open the site and there was no evidence of any downloads on his computer but he was arrested and convicted of felony sexual abuse of a child - again no victim. The witch hunt goes on and on across this country. Has it ever occurred to you that we never, never hear of an arrest of anyone who produces this filth? but instead law enforcement runs after thousands, upon thousands of people who get turned in most of the time by a disgruntled family member who on their own computer may have inadvertently for a split second had a window pop open that was not intended only to close it immediately but leaving a cyber- trace, that it did in fact happen. Over and over again the full stories of what really occurs never makes the news because let’s face it only 7% of criminal cases go to trial in the United States leaving 93% of all accusations left totally unsubstantiated or at least in a criminal court of law in front of the public’s eye. A classic example that is played out over and over again in this country is the one of a young man perhaps 17 or 18 living with (or in essence is) living with his girlfriend in the girlfriend’s single-mother’s home openly having sex with the younger daughter for years, and mind you in many cases a girl who has already had hundreds of sexual experiences with countless boys and men, and perhaps has even already had an abortion, then the day arrives when the young man does something to make the mom and daughter real mad, or perhaps he wants to leave the relationship or they want to move on to someone else and then out of revenge he is reported by the daughter, the mother or both for having been in a sexual relationship with the daughter all along.

I repeat "How do you have a problem with a newspaper exposing a would be child molester?" What did they expose with the fact that he worked in Ca. Did it say hehad the same problem in Ca. With the job he had in Mineral County, I don't think he had any thing like this on his record in Ca. But I could be wrong. No reach.

How do you know he has made a career out of working with children so he
could try to rape a 12 year old. Do I care that he was so dumb to try this? You
bet I do! That way I told Montana Tax Payer, no one is entitled, because if you
do the long arm of the law "real cops" will reach out and grab your behind and
put it along with you in the slammer.

He was not a cop!! If he had been a real cop, his behind belongs in the slammer. I care also about the juvenile part. But I also want the Missoulain,
to tell us if subject #2 works in a fast food joint, were Juveniles go. And if
subject #3 was a school bus driver and subject #4 was a truck driver. As I
understand it subject #5 was the mother of the juvenile. Who knows what
subject #6 was or did. As we know subject #7 worked on diesels.

None of the above is as titillating as a "cop" Lets have a profile on all seven
is all I asked for. Here again "no reach."

Mtr7, The only reason the our government does not let us know what these people have been convicted of is because society for the most part has a lynch-mob mentality and wants to group all these people into one large lump; and label them: sex offenders, molesters, predators, chomos, etc. when if the truth of exactly what they did was reported a large percentage of our population would scratch their heads and say "Is that actually a crime?" and even a larger percent of the population would say (and again while scratching their heads): "Is that really a sex crime?".

They exposed his background by writing this article. I never said they had anything to do with the sting operation, nice reach on your part though. Most people do care that someone who has made a career out of working with children tryed to rape a 12 year old, apparently you don't. I'll bet you would if your child was one that he worked with. I don't care that he was a cop, I care about the juvenile part.

I find it titillating? Again another reach on your part. Nice try with the diesel spark plugs too.

Last thing first. "How do you have a problem with a newspaper
exposing a would be child molester?" Two word ans. I don't.

Question for you. How did this newspaper in any way, do any
thing to expose this or the other six clowns. The sting was ran by
the police of Missoula County. I'm sure if any newspaper knew
anything about this sting before it went down, it would have been
on the front page the day before. I'm not saying they should not,
but a fact is a fact.

I don't care what kind of job he has or had even if it was changing
spark plugs in a diesel. All I asked Kathryn, was, are you going
to run a profile on the other six. But, yes to some of the unwashed
out there, Myers is some kind of a (cop), therefor this is titillating. I
see it may have worked on you.

    @Montana Tax Payer---above----
Once you employed by a city, county...................................you are
entitled." To what? If you screw up like Myers did. The long arm of
the law "the cops" will grab your behind and put it in the slammer.

Good work by law enforcement! Get these creepos off the street and labeled for life. Everyone should look online at the sex offenders in their area. It has photos and addresses. I only wish it would say exactly what they were convicted of, so we might know if they are more of a threat to children.

What is pathetic, sick, and sad. Is that we the people allow this to happen. Did you know that once you are employed for a city, county, state, or a federal position you are entitled. Entitled means you are permitted to consume pot, consume alcohol, and have sexual activities while on the job. Just don't get caught. The truth is the truth. How many people know someone who does this?
