A Kalispell snowmobile rider was killed in an avalanche Saturday in the Whitefish Range near Olney.
In a news release issued Sunday, Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said three snowmobilers were riding together near Swede Creek when one of them triggered the slide. Two snowmobilers were buried, although one was able to dig out.
When the other snowmobiler, a 33-year-old Kalispell man, was eventually located using an avalanche transceiver and dug out, he was already deceased and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Because of poor weather conditions, darkness and avalanche danger, the man’s body was not recovered until Sunday, when a helicopter was dispatched to his location.
Curry said the snowmobiler's name is being withheld pending notification of his family. Avalanche experts are investigating at the site of the slide, according to the sheriff.
