The Clark Fork River running near flood stage May 4, 2018.

Missoula Emergency Medical Services officials helped an unnamed man up from the bank of the Clark Fork River below Taco John’s Thursday after law enforcement officials received 911 calls that a man had jumped from the Orange Street Bridge.

Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh said the first call came in to police dispatchers around 11:30 a.m., “probably when he was trying to climb out.”

The current may have pulled the man to the bank, said Missoula Fire Department Battalion Chief Tony Cate.

Shortly afterward, the man got out of the river near Taco John’s, Welsh said. He was brought to an ambulance that had parked along the 600 block of West Broadway Street, said Welsh, who described the man as cold and wet. The man was taken to Providence St. Patrick Hospital, he said.

“I don’t know who he is at this point or what his intentions were,” Welsh said.

The Clark Fork — running fast, and full of debris — has been at flood stage for days, at 11.65 feet on Thursday.
