1939-2010: RONAN - We lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend today. He was the first born on Jan. 2, 1939, to Bernice McLeod Senecal and Herbert Edgar Sias (Ed) Sr. in the old St. Ignatius Hospital. He just missed being a New Year's Baby. He died as the result of a logging accident on July 9, 2010.
Herb grew up in the Mission Valley, attending grade school at the Ursline School in St. Ignatius and graduated from Ronan High School in 1959. Herb enjoyed playing football through high school. After high school Herb attended Mo Ka Hum Indian Bible School in Minnesota, graduating in 1965. During his last year there he met his future wife, Ann Walton. They were married on June 4, 1966. They made their home in the Ronan area for the past 44 years. Herb spent his life dedicated to his family, friends and church. He was always willing to help his children and others because of his strong personal faith in the Lord. He always enjoyed watching his children grow and mature.
Herb worked at Plum Creek Sawmill in Pablo for 33 years and retired from there. He was very proud of his years there. He enjoyed time in the Bob Marshall Wilderness guiding for Bud and Gussie Smith and later Mike Smith. He greatly enjoyed helping hunters get their game and enjoyed hunting camp. He could tell many stories from there. He was a wonderful storyteller. Herb loved hunting, fishing and camping in the woods. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren to love the woods. He passed on in the woods he loved most, doing what he loved. Herb will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He was a friend to everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Gerald Sias and sister Jean Senecal. He is survived by his wife Ann; sons Jody Sias (Wanda), Ed Sias (Misty); daughter Naomi Schoonover (James); daughter-in-law Isie lbabao; grandchildren Craig Franks (Jessica), Curtis Franks (April), James Franks, Caitlyn Franks (Charlie), Kim Sias (Caitlyn), Jeriko Sias, LaToya Thomas, Cierra Sias and T. J. Sias; seven great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
The family wants to thank the medical teams from Hot Springs, Ronan and Polson for their excellent care of Herb.
