A female University of Montana student reported being raped by a male student early Friday morning, according to Missoula police.
Missoula Police Department spokesman Travis Welsh said the case was referred to city officers by UM police. He said both the alleged victim and the suspect are in their early 20s.
The alleged assault was reported to police from UM's Curry Health Center at 1:04 a.m. Friday, where UM police found the woman on the sidewalk, UM Chief of Police Marty Ludemann said.
Ludemann said the officers spoke to her and took an initial report.
Welsh said she told police the incident happened at the suspect's residence, although it's unclear whether that is on campus or off.
Welsh said the man is known to the woman and police. He said the public is not in danger.
"Given the apparent acquaintance relationship, this is not somebody I would characterize as an ongoing threat to the public," Welsh said.
The case has been assigned to Detective Connie Brueckner for investigation, he said.
