The woman who died Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision on a slippery U.S. Highway 93 between Arlee and Ravalli has been identified as 65-year-old Janet Harmsen of Polson.
A preliminary report by the Montana Highway Patrol said Harmsen’s Subaru was heading northbound shortly before 3 p.m. when it crossed over into oncoming traffic around mile marker 25.5, as the highway enters a narrow canyon south of Ravalli. The Subaru collided with a southbound Toyota FJ Cruiser.
Harmsen was pronounced dead at the scene. Lake County Sheriff Don Bell said her body was taken to the state crime lab in Missoula for an autopsy. The two men in the Toyota, the driver in his 60s and a passenger in his 80s, were taken to Providence St. Patrick Hospital. Their condition is not known.
Traffic was backed up for nearly four hours while workers cleared the scene and conducted an investigation.
The death was the 184th on Montana highways this year, three fewer than on the same day in 2016.
