The University of Montana expected a $5.7 million loss for the most recent academic year, and officials are preparing for another budget crunch. Do you agree with the budget cuts being made at UM? Or would you make different cuts?

Steffeni Hakes: I think football has came too much of a priority. Our bills are wayyyy too much!!

***

Joan Davika Lerner: I disagree. Football is a huge income for both the u of m and Missoula. You cut that or decrease the performance of the football program you should expect a decrease on the city's profit.

***

Mike Hopkins: An average of 80% of UM's budget goes to payroll for faculty, staff, administrators and students. The second giant chunk is grounds keeping and programs. The fact is that UM has over hired and overbuilt. Sucks to admit but it has more teachers, administrators, and more programs than is sustainable given its average revenue. Football is not even a blip on the radar of UM's budget problem.

Brint Wahlberg: All athletics expansions were privately paid for, so not a fair comparison. The Charles Clapp building update/remodel I believe came before the Montana legislature, can't recall but I believe the request was turned down.

***

Tim Adams: Law is a dying field right now. It's over-saturated and some law schools are even being sued right now for over-promising job prospects for their graduates. Like it or not, as long as people keep graduating with degrees that are worthless in the real world and come with mountains of debt, people are going to keep moving away from those fields.

William H Bockemuehl: My Father taught at UM for 25 years. He 'retired' when the faculty unionized and they demanded that he pay dues even if he didn't join. I put retired in quotes because he continued to teach for anothr 7-10 years for free. Perhaps if the union allowed teachers to be merit based rather than longevity based they would save money, have better academics and so on.

Devyn Hafer: $350,000 a year in just parking tickets, and they just doubled parking ticket fines. Certainly thats enough money to keep at least a few professors around... but what do I know.
