This week the Missoulian reported that local protesters were joining a national movement to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day. Facebook readers shared their thoughts on the idea:

***

Megan Mattingly-Arthur: We should absolutely start celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day.

***

Rob Miller: Why? Are people "offended"?

***

Sahna Ballek: Indeed! I find that celebrating colonialism and mass genocide is quite offensive. And btw, Happy Indigenous People's Day!

***

Montana Fam: Clearly you may want to do a little research. He was a murderous, rape and pillage sort of fellow. He got lost at sea, ended up here and thought he landed in India (thus the reason Native Americans are referred to as Indians) Not exactly one to celebrate and remember.

***

Darci Coffman: For me, it's not about anyone being "offended." It's about the fact that he DIDN'T "discover" our country! The fact that he did murder and enslave so many "Indians" makes our celebration of him all the more disgraceful.

***

Lee Gfunkerror: No. It should be changed to Leif Erikson Day.

***

Riley Pearson: We should revise and delete all history that wasn't nice. Ban flags, burn books, tear down statues, memorials, museums, etc... (Sarcasm)

***

Megan Mattingly-Arthur: No one said that we should stop teaching about Christopher Columbus, just that we shouldn't celebrate him with a national holiday.

***

Liz Dutton: Here's my 2 cents. America has a holiday for just about everything you can think of, yet Native American's don't have a single, solitary day? We have Black History Month, Breast Cancer Awareness month, Labor Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veterans day....but NOTHING for Native American's?

I really, truly believe that we should petition to have an entire month dedicated to Indigenous People! I think we should absolutely share their rich culture, histories, customs and beliefs. Especially for what they were BEFORE being Christianized.

***

Barbie France Luhman: No ... Because tired of people changing stuff because they decided it is PC. If you want to make another holiday then do it.

***

Debby Florence: its not that its PC its that as a country we should grow and change as we learn these things
