My youngest daughter visited Missoula last week and was able to attend the Western States Cross Country Meet on the University Golf Course. She enjoyed the spectacle but remarked that many of the girls didn't seem to be properly coached. She said they got “yelled at a lot” even though it was apparent that some had never received coaching in breathing technique, in best positions for hands and arms, and appropriate posture and stride for running hills.
I had no idea that cross country coaching was this demanding, but I do want to belatedly thank the Sentinel High School coaches who took Kerry and Laurie Holm to the Montana State Championship those many years ago.
