“Trump bans refugees”: the headline jolted my already frazzled political nerves. Hearteningly, protests erupted in cities and airports around the country, including nearly a thousand Missoulians in Caras Park last Sunday.

As the marches fade, let’s keep working for those stranded in refugee camps around the world. The Global Partnership for Education brings education to children in the world’s poorest places, including refugee camps and war-torn countries.

Members of Congress submit annual personal appropriations request forms. Ask U.S. Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester to request the Appropriations Committee to include $125 million funding for the GPE within the $925 million Basic Education budget for FY2018.

I am proud to live in a community that welcomes refugees from diverse backgrounds. Let’s keep working with our feet, our voices and our pens.

Judy Zizzo,

Missoula
