The Beartooth Pass has closed for the season, according to an announcement issued Friday by the Montana Department of Transportation.
Beginning 12 miles south of Red Lodge, U.S. Highway 212 is expected to remain closed until Memorial Day weekend 2018, according to the release.
In 2016 the Beartooth Pass closed for the season on Oct. 11.
The Vista Point portion of the road sits at an elevation of about 9,200 feet. Forecast models for that elevation in nearby areas Friday night going into Saturday morning showed a possibility of wind gusts between 70 mph and 80 mph, according to Aaron Gilstad, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Billings.
Snowfall is also expected in the Beartooth Mountains through Sunday, with 8 inches or more possible depending on elevation, Gilstad said.
"It doesn't take a whole lot," Gilstad said. "It gets pretty treacherous pretty quickly up above Vista Point."
