On August 31, the historic Sperry Chalet in Glacier National Park was gutted by the Sprague fire. The iconic building captured the hearts of visitors worldwide, as reflected by these Instagram users.
Sadly the Sperry Chalet became a causalty of the Sprague Fire and burned to the ground last night in Glacier National Park. It was built in 1913 and provided limited accommodations to backcountry hikers. Here it provided us a bit of shelter from the wind when we hiked up to it in June before it opened for the season. #sperrychalet #glacier #montana #hike #glaciernationalpark #hammockhiking #hammock
Sperry Chalet 1913-2017. Having called Sperry home for the past three years, I was devasted to hear news that the chalet burned down. I'm hopeful for the other structures and grateful for those still up there fighting the fire. My heart is broken, but so thankful to have spent all that time up there with some of the best people on Earth. #glacier_national_park #glaciernationalpark #sperrychalet #spraguefire
"I've been here for nearly 30 years now and no two days have been the same. So while you're here, pay attention! Whatever happens to you today- will never happen again." Thinking of Sperry Chalet and the tragic loss of a magical historic place in @glacier_national_park to this seasons fire fury. Rain please. PC The Artful Appetite.
We learned today that the hundred year old #SperryChalet burned in the #SpragueFire out in @glaciernps. Last year we took a much needed stop here to refill our water bottles and buy brownies on our 20 mile round trip hike up to Sperry Glacier, which we left late for, and were totally unprepared for. Despite this, Sperry Glacier was the highlight of our entire week in the park, and it would not have been possible without the godsend that was Sperry Chalet.
TBT - Sperry Chalet at Glacier National Park in September 2015. This 104-year-old structure burned to the ground as of about three hours ago, a casualty of the Sprague Fire. I hiked up to the chalet in July 2011, my third hike ever in the park, when it was still half buried in snow, and then again in 2015. I am utterly devastated that our beloved Chalet has been lost to the Sprague Fire. Each and every person who was lucky enough to spend time here knows what a magical place it was, and what a terrible loss this is. My family has been incredibly blessed to get to share this magnificent place with the public for the past 63 years, and we are so very sad it has ended in this way. The memories I have made at Sperry are ones that I will cherish forever; from childhood adventures, to the two wonderful summers I served on staff, to only months ago when I had the privilege of sharing this beautiful place with my husband-to-be. It truly feels like the death of a loved one. On the other hand, I am in absolute awe of the power of Mother Nature. Though the loss of this historic landmark is heart-breaking, it does a person good to put things into perspective. My mountains still stand strong, and the forests will regenerate, wilder than before. Life goes on, though it may change. Thank you to everyone near and far for your condolences. It means so much that the magic of Sperry touched so many, and I'm so very sorry. • • • #SperryChalet #GlacierNationalPark #GNP #GlacierNPS #CrownOfTheContinent #SpragueFire #Montana
Sadly the Sperry Chalet was lost to #wildfire last night. I never had the chance to visit but I was definitely on my #bucketlist #SperryChalet was located about seven miles east of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The chalet was opened in 1914 by the Great Northern Railway and was a National Historic Landmark contributing property, being one of five structures in the Great Northern Railway Buildings #NationalHistoricLandmark. Along with Granite Park Chalet, Sperry Chalet was one of the two remaining backcountry chalets in #GlacierNationalPark @glaciernps @glacier_national_park @nationalparkservice #hiking
I can't believe this wonderful historic landmark burned down last night, along with the beautiful forest that surrounded it. @shi.schmidt and I must have been some of the last people to see the Sperry Chalet, as it was evacuated that afternoon we were there - I guess I can sadly cross staying there one day off the bucket list. But I won't be forgetting the pie, the views, and the wildlife we saw there anytime soon! #sperrychalet #glaciernationalpark #historiclandmark
Such sad news today that the Sperry Chalet has burned down from the Sprague Creek fire. This building was built in 1913 and I'm very glad that Trav and I stayed there in July as an early anniversary date. We were there for two days but we totally fell in love with the place and the vibe with no cell service, or running water in your room, or even electricity. It was so peaceful and the scenery was beautiful. I hope Silly and Billy are safe 🐐, and am still praying for the firefighters up there, that is some steep terrain to fight. 💔 . . . #glaciernationalpark #SperryChalet #montanafires #GNP #sperrytrail #nps #montanamoment #exploreglacier #406 #spraguefire #glacierNPS #nationalhistoriclandmark #westglacier
So saddened by the news of Sperry Chalet burning down in Glacier National Park. Sperry was a treasured part of our family's story and times together - as it was for so many other American families. This photo was taken in Sperry in July this last summer. #glaciernationalpark #sperry #sperrychalet #nationalpark #nps
RIP Sperry Chalet :( Glacier lost an icon this evening when this historic stone and timber structure was lost to the Sprague Creek fire. Sperry provided a backcountry experience that's pretty unique in America. And the best chocolate cherry cake I've ever had, including any frontcountry competitors. So sad. #glaciernationalpark #glaciernp #glacier_national_park #sperrychalet #fire #wildfire #montana #backcountrycabin #cabinporn
The collective grief in our community tonight is so heavy. Every single person in the Glacier community lost a piece of their home and their heart in Sperry Chalet. So thankful that the firefighters are safe. Please send your prayers and blessings for rain to Montana. Repost @glacierguidesmontanaraft ・・・ We are heartbroken to share that the main structure at #SperryChalet was lost at approximately 6pm today, Thursday, August 31, due to a blowup from the #SpragueFire. Absolutely heartbroken.
Just found out that the lovely #sperrychalet just burned to the ground despite the best efforts of valiant firefighters battling against the Sprague Creek fire in #glaciernationalpark. So sad to lose such an iconic place. I'm so fortunate to have had the chance to stay there a couple summers past. Sick to my stomach tonight.
I'm so devastated to hear about the loss of the historic Sperry Chalet today in Glacier Park. I'm grateful my daughter had the opportunity to see it with me earlier this summer. It was such a magical place! 😢🙏 God please, make it rain! #prayforrainmontana #sperrychalet #gnp #glaciernationalpark #montanafires
