John Lewis, former state director for U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, is the Democratic candidate for Montana's open U.S. House seat.

HELENA – Democrat John Lewis of Helena raised a total of nearly $400,000 through Dec. 31 for his race for the U.S. House.

Lewis is the first House candidate to release fundraising totals for the final three-month period of 2013.

He is unopposed in the Democratic primary so far, while four Republicans have announced their candidacies to date. Three other Republicans are considering entering the race.

Campaign finance reports must be filed Jan. 31 with the Federal Election Commission.

In his second quarter of fundraising, Lewis raised more than $200,000 to bring his campaign total to about $396,000.

He has spent about $68,000 so far to leave about $328,000 left cash on hand as of Dec. 31.

Lewis has kicked in $50 of his own money into the campaign.

The campaign reported no debts.

Lewis had set a goal of raising $2 million for his campaign to be the first Democrat to capture the state’s lone House seat since 1994.
