HELENA – State Rep. Champ Edmunds, R-Missoula, confirmed Tuesday he is considering running in 2014 for the U.S. Senate seat held by longtime Democratic Sen. Max Baucus.

He is the first Republican to publicly express interest in challenging Baucus, but a number of others are expected to surface.

Edmunds was elected in November to his second term in the Montana House.

“We’re doing some exploratory work, but right now, we need to focus on this session,” Edmunds said Tuesday. “We’re not running. We’re exploring.“

He has a campaign website under construction at champedmunds.com and has printed envelopes to solicit donations for a U.S. Senate campaign.

“Yes! I will help Champ become the next U.S. senator from Montana!” the envelope says.

Edmunds said he thinks it’s time for a change in Montana’s Senate seat.

“I think I’d be a fresh face over there,” he said. “Senator Baucus has been over there over 40 years. I think we need some new ideas and some fresh ideas. “

Baucus was elected to the U.S. House in 1974 and served there four years. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 and has served there since. Baucus ranks third in seniority in the 100-member Senate.

“Even with all that seniority, he doesn’t seem to be able to use the seniority to help Montana,” Edmunds said.

A South Carolina native, Edmunds moved to Montana in 1997 after serving as a submariner in the U.S. Navy from 1984 to 1995.

He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting and finance from the University of Montana.

Edmunds works as a mortgage banker.

He is divorced and has two children.

As a legislator, Edmunds serves on the House Appropriations Committee and its General Government Subcommittee and the House Rules Committee.

Edmunds doesn't look like a champ. He looks like another Republican chump. Baucus will defeat him easily.

I thought I had awoke from a long winter's nap this morning, and that it must be April Fool's Day when I saw that Champ was considering a Senatorial run. The best thing that will come of this is that he will not be our HD 100 carpetbagger Rep anymore.

Montana has elected a total of two Republicans to the United States Senate in the last 100 years, and the last one was a disaster that most Montanans are still regretting. That mistake will not be made again anytime soon.

This seat belongs to Max for as long as he would like it, and considering his youth and energy, I anticipate he will be Montana's senior senator long have his detractors have passed.

The last person we need to replace Senator Baucus is a darn republican screwball who will use that post to eliminate services for the poor and mentally ill. I have yet to see any Republican who cares about anyone who isn't a member of the party of the fat unaring elephant.

It is definitely time for Baucus to go. He has been there in DC much too long. He was and still is a lapdog for this Obama creature. Tester is a stooge and lackey for this Obama, and two of them is too many.

It will be very tough to beat Baucus. Despite the fact he tried to get a judgeship for his concubine, cheating on two ex wives, lying to the public (Stanford trained lawyer said he can't read the bill when asked if he had read it), defying most montana voters (By voting for obamacare), Ranting in a drunken stupor on the senate floor, and recently he completely relegated his role as Banking Committee Chairman by do NOTHING. He stops by Missoula from time to time for a cheesy photo-op or to succor his loyal base (Public is never invited). Yes....with all these stunning attributes, he cannot be beaten because he siphon's alot of money from rich farmers and most Montana voters fail to use their brain when voting (Sorry.....the truth can hurt a little). For examole, had the average dolt considered that they voted in the tie breaking senate vote when they voted for Lord Tester, they would have voted to keep Burns. Recall that all Tester ever said was "I am not Conrad Burns"......that is all it took.

Tester is a heck of a lot better man thatn Burnss could ever dreamed of being. tester gives a hoot, Burns has a republican didn't give a darn about anyone outside of his own party and did nothing for Montana.

He voted to repeal MMJ on HB 161, so I'll never vote for him.

How many of him does Mr. Edmunds think there are?
