HELENA - A small wildfire ignited in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest Tuesday.

The Black Mountain fire was reported by a helicopter passing over the area around noon Tuesday, and it burned about 5 acres on a ridgetop by that evening. The fire is located in Powell County approximately eight miles northwest of Lincoln.

The fire is burning in heavy timber, which is producing significant dark smoke, Kathy Bushnell, forest public affairs officer, said Tuesday. No structures are threatened, but the blaze is displaying active fire behavior, she added. No closures have been ordered.

Firefighters, a helicopter and an air tanker were dispatched to the fire. A total of 25 people were assisting as of Tuesday evening.
