The WestSlope Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Missoula issued a challenge to all Trout Unlimited chapters in the state. The chapter to donate the most flies per member to Warriors and Quiet Waters would win a Winston fly rod. Warriors and Quiet Waters is a Bozeman-based organization dedicated to helping post-9/11 severely injured veterans by providing weeklong fly fishing retreats.

Well, we should have known that challenging Butte to a contest would stimulate a lot of activity. The George Grant Chapter of Butte won with an amazing 20.8 flies donated per member, beating the second-highest chapter by nearly 50 percent!

But the real winners were the vets. Together, the 13 Montana chapters of Trout Unlimited tied and secured donations of 17,944 flies. Imagine the smiles on the faces of these vets when presented with boxes of flies tied and donated by anglers around this great state.

Congratulations to the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This was a contest our chapter was happy to lose.
