U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (guest column, Sept. 12) clearly has no understanding that severely burned forests host legions of plant and animal species that occur under no other forest conditions.

Suggesting that we need to manage our forests in a way that reduces fire severity and thereby reduces the associated diversity of life on earth is politically irresponsible. Instead, we need to learn to be safe enough to be able to celebrate the biological transformation that follows severe fire.
