I am growing increasingly concerned about the amount of plastic pollution in our community.

As I drive along Broadway, I see plastic bags along the road, a breeze away from landing in the Clark Fork and ending up as dinner for unsuspecting wildlife. Even the drive between Missoula and Bonner is appalling — look at how much garbage litters the median!

With this in mind, I'd like to say thank you to the city of Missoula for placing a filter at Caras Park to filter out debris in our river.

I'd also like to give a huge thank-you to Ciao Mambo for no longer giving plastic straws to patrons unless requested. Disposable plastic straws and cutlery are used once, then discarded, and many of them end up in our water ways. I hope that more restaurants and bars downtown pick up on the trend of phasing out plastic straws. We as individuals can also make a conscious choice of bringing reusable containers and cutlery, or simply refusing a straw. Our children, and the planet will thank us.
