I’m appalled by U.S. Sen. Steve Daines' vote in favor of Friday’s tax plan, which was written behind closed doors and delivered with no time for senators to read before voting.
In 2015 I received my Ph.D. in biology at Cornell University. I now work for a science education nonprofit that serves K-12 students across Montana. I am doing critical work to help the children in our state. The only way I was able to responsibly finance my Ph.D. was through the use of tuition waivers and tax deductions. The new plan will now make graduate education even less accessible, and even more expensive.
Shame on Senator Daines for providing tax cuts to the super wealthy on the backs of lower/middle class Americans, graduate students and other economically vulnerable people. The median income in Montana is $43,872, which puts Montana communities in the lowest third of earnings in the United States.
He is hurting his own people, and we Montanans will remember this when he comes up for re-election.
