Over the last few years, any discussion of fixing our broken immigration system has become such a partisan issue that calls for sensible reform — for either illegal or legal immigration — has been met by outcry.

The reality is, each year, the U.S. accepts 1 million immigrants, roughly the same amount of people as the entire state of Montana. We need a solution.

One possibility is the proposed Reforming American Immigration for a Strong Economy (RAISE) Act.

The RAISE Act gives priority to the most skilled immigrants, prioritizing individuals who would contribute to our economy and succeed in our country, and places an emphasis on keeping nuclear families together.

I urge U.S. Sen. Jon Tester to look into the RAISE Act, which will benefit our working class as well as our business community and will help build a more prosperous Montana.
