In mid-October, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced its proposal to raise entrance fees in 17 national parks. The spike in rates is coupled with millions of dollars in budget cuts, making this increase a direct assault on the average American family.
The president is proposing huge cuts to the budget, then turning around and asking us pay it out of our pockets. A raise from $30 to $70 will make it difficult for lower-income families and individuals to visit our state’s parks.
I understand that fees are necessary for the maintenance of our parks, but they have got to make it affordable. I am concerned that our public lands will turn into places for only the 1 percent.
I encourage all who are concerned to contact Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke while the public comment is still open.
