Republicans are always going on about making the government smaller. But that's not really what they want. What they really want is to own the government so they can continue rigging the system to benefit the ultra rich, who buy every “representative” they can, at every level, from the county to the state to the federal.
They’ve certainly achieved their goal, to a large extent. The playing field has been tilting for years, always in favor of the rich.
When I was a young man, in the '60s, people all over the country could afford a college education. My sister put herself entirely through her schooling, earning five degrees. She did it by working for the telephone company. She had zero debt when she finished her last classes. She worked hard, but was not extraordinary.
Because the wealthy have been eating more of the riches of this country, everything else has had less to subsist on. Less for infrastructure, less for education, less for health care.
We can write letters and email and phone our representatives. We can, and ought to, rattle their cages. It’s only a democracy if we use it. Please use it. This stuff affects every one of us.
