I am heartsick at all the anti-Forest Service verbiage flying around during this unprecedented fire season — comments on social media, in the paper, responses to television newscasts.
The women and men out there are working 16-hour days in horrible conditions. You think you have it bad with the smoke? And no, they are not prolonging the agony to rack up more overtime. They want a "season-ending" event as much as we do.
When you say "oh, not the firefighters, it's management that is the bad guy," consider how demoralizing that also can be for the folks on the line.
There will be plenty of time to question and assess decisions made and solutions for the future; right now we need to support all the personnel who are out there dealing with this disaster.
