First, my condolences to Tim Lloyd’s family — by blood and friendship — who have been mourning his loss. I do not know what it feels like to be so cold that you die. I hope that he did not feel pain.
Second, please stop calling my community members “transients.” Let’s put that word to rest and no longer use it in our community and in its newspaper.
Each one of us lives a complex life. To distill a person’s existence down to the label of “transient” is degrading. In this town, that term is often used in conversations which ridicule, place judgment, or dehumanize a person who is experiencing homelessness. It creates a false truth — that someone without permanent housing cannot be a Missoulian.
I hope Missoula’s love for the word “transient” is fleeting, brief and temporary. Using language which perpetuates harm and ostracizes others has no home in my town.
