I just received an email from a distant cousin that was in response to the Colin Kaepernick controversy. It was an "inspirational" video of Lou Holtz talking about how he pulled himself up by his bootstraps from poverty.
Do I need to point out that Holtz is not black? He did not experience friends and family being profiled for traffic stops, being wrestled to the ground or, being unarmed, shot to death because of the presumption of some unidentified guilt.
Kaepernick may be very wealthy but, unlike many who are wealthy, often not because of their own skill and hard work, he has not forgotten those left behind by racism.
I only wish that I had some powerful, nonviolent, symbolic way of expressing my outrage over the way our present administration defends racism and calls those who peacefully protest unpatriotic. Our president legitimizes white supremacy. His greatest accomplishment has been in dividing us. It is this administration that demeans our flag, our national anthem and America with his rhetoric.
