You better believe former Montana football coach Mick Delaney is looking forward to this week in Missoula.
Two of his passions are football and golf. They'll mix together when the Gene Brosovich Griz Football Golf Invitational and Celebrity Gala is held Thursday and Friday.
"No. 1 it gets a lot of the old players back together," said Delaney, who guided the Grizzlies to the FCS playoffs in 2014. "That’s what makes it fun is so many of them coming back, socializing and having fun."
The list of dignitaries includes Butte native Sam Jankovich, who played football at Montana before going on to serve as athletic director for the Miami Hurricanes and Washington State Cougars and eventually landing the job of CEO with the New England Patriots. Other ex-players include Guy Bingham, who enjoyed a 13-year NFL career, along with ex-player/coach Mick Dennehy, Cole Bergquist, Brian Ah Yat, Brian Salonen, Billy Cockhill, Jim Hann, Glen Schmasow, Doug Betters and Brad Dantic.
For fans more in touch with recent Griz history, former quarterback Andrew Selle will be on hand. He's about to enter his first season as a UM assistant coach, working with the quarterbacks as well as serving as offensive quality control coach.
He's also helping out with Thursday and Friday's events.
“One of the things that makes this special in my mind is it’s certainly Grizzly football," said Selle, who will be joined in the festivities by the rest of the UM coaching staff and a host of current players. "This is our chance to do a golf tournament that's only for football and it's a chance to get a lot of our players on the course to talk with the fans."
The event begins Thursday night with social hour, followed by a live auction at the Holiday Inn Missoula Downtown at 7:15 p.m. The golf event at Canyon River will have a shotgun start on Friday morning.
All of the proceeds of the event directly benefit Griz football. For more information, call Delaney at 370-6285, Selle at 540-2141 or Colin Bonnicksen at 317-3992.
Note: Also expected to appear at the event are ex-Grizzlies Mike Hagen, Kyle Ryan, Rob Schulte, Mike Bouchee, Jeff Larson, Glen Welch, Gene Leonard, Mike Ferriter, Dylan McFarland, Blaine McElmurry, Robin Peters, Bill Bouchee and Scott Gurnsey.
