TUCSON, Ariz. – The Garden City (Missoula) Junior softball team is enjoying a memorable weekend.

The team moved to 2-0 at the West Regional of Little League Junior Softball Tournament with a 9-5 win over Utah on Saturday night. Garden City will play in the championship round for the first time in program history, according to coach Tim Gray, on Tuesday night against Alaska.

“They battled through and continued to be hot at the plate,” Gray said. “Hannah Hirning pitched a complete game and had great plate presence.

“They’ve worked hard the last two nights and earned a couple of days off.”

Hirning piled up seven strikeouts in the circle. At the plate she tallied a team-high three hits. Teammates Adessa Gagner and Callie McKillop each had two hits.

Sierrah Hardy led the Missoula-area team with three RBIs. Hirning had two and Brianna Canning one.

Garden City jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two frames and never looked back. The closest Utah managed to get was 9-5 with three runs in the top of the seventh. Garden City outhit Utah, 13-9, and did not have a single error defensively.
