University of Montana rodeo standout Dustin Stephens has earned a spot in the College National Finals Rodeo on June 9-15 in Casper, Wyo.

The Corvallis native will compete in team roping with Wyatt Bloom of Montana State. Stephens will serve as header and Bloom as heeler.

“Dustin is a great athlete and he will be hard to beat next year in the all-around,” Montana first-year rodeo coach Kory Mytty said. “You need to be in the top three to qualify (for the CNFR). Dustin ended up fourth this year but Bloom won the all-around so Dustin has a spot.”

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Stephens and Bloom compete for rival universities.

“It is a little rare,” Mytty said, “but you do have that ability in rodeo.”
