BOZEMAN — Basketball stars Philip Malatare of Arlee and Kamden Hilborn of Helena are the 406mtsports.com Athletes of the Month for March after leading their teams to state championships for the seond consecutive season..

Malatare was chosen Most Valuable Player of the Class C boys tournament after leading Arlee (26-0) past Manhattan Christian for its second straight crown and 48th straight win. He averaged 18.7 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals during the tournament in Butte.

But Malatare, who reportedly has committed to Montana as a preferred walk-on, made even a bigger splash by orchestrating the Warriors' suicide-awareness program. The team made two videos that went viral and was the subject of a story in the New York Times Magazine.

Hilborn, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, became the first Helena player in 15 years to earn all-state honors for three consecutive seasons and earned MVP honors in the Class AA tournament for the past two years--sharing it with teammate Jamie Pickens last month. Hilborn led the state with 5.5 assists and 4.7 steals per game while setting the school record for steals in a season with 99 as the Bengals finished 21-3.

Hilborn is a 4.0 student and an all-round athlete, earning all-state honors three times in track and field and twice in soccer. She has won two state championships in basketball and two in soccer.
