With just one week to go in the regular season, Class A finally saw the No. 1 spot in the 406mtsports.com girls basketball rankings change hands.
Unbeaten Havre is the new No. 1 after previously top-ranked Columbia Falls fell to No. 4 Browning on Saturday night. It was the first Class A loss for defending state champion Columbia Falls. Browning’s win helped the Indians hang on to the No. 4 slot, though they fell to Havre earlier in the week.
Things remained relatively calm in the remainder of the classifications, with Missoula Sentinel (AA), Three Forks (B) and Belt (C) holding on to their No. 1 rankings.
The bottom of the Class B rankings saw its usual tumult, and so Jefferson made its debut, in the list at No. 10.
Class B and Class C start their district tournaments this week, so this will be the final week of new rankings for those classifications.
Some big games lie ahead in Class AA this week. Sentinel plays No. 2 Helena Capital and No. 3 Helena, and Helena and Capital also resume their intra-city rivalry. Billings rivals Senior (No. 4) and West (No. 5) also tangle this week.
All four top teams stayed the same in the boys rankings this week. Great Falls CMR topped rival Great Falls 60-51 last Thursday in a battle of the top two teams in Class AA. The win solidified the Rustlers at the No. 1 spot in AA while they also avenged a 32-point loss to the Bison earlier this year. Great Falls dropped one spot to No. 3, while Missoula Sentinel jumped up to No. 2 after it swept both of its crosstown rivals. Bozeman and Missoula Hellgate round out the top five despite the Hawks loss to Billings West on Thursday.
Hamilton remained unbeaten and the top team in Class A. Lewistown made its season debut at No. 5, replacing the Belgrade Panthers after the Golden Eagles defeated them on Wednesday.
Class B and C also stayed almost entirely the same as a week ago. Bigfork (B) and Arlee (C) remained in the No. 1 spots and undefeated. Fairfield once again cracked the top 10 in B, while Denton-Geyser-Stanford debuted at No. 9 in Class C.
