Coach says: "We have good size and skill. We have a chance to have four 6-footers on the court at any given time. We will look to our defense being a strength and I feel with our guards we can apply good ball pressure and control the glass"

Etc: Junior Shayla Montague was honorable mention all-state last year recording 7 points per game and 7 rebounds per game.

Helena Bengals

Head coach: Eric Peterson

2016-17 record: 20-3

Starters returning: Kamden Hilborn, Sr.; Jamie Pickens, Jr.

Coach says: "We will continue to push the ball up the floor this season. We will rely on our returning starters to set the tone for the rest of the program."

Etc: Hilborn and Pickens were all-state a year ago in helping the Bengals to the Class AA championship. ... Pickens ranked third in scoring (14.9 ppg), second in rebounds (8.9 rpg) and first in field goal percentage (107 for 210, .510). Hilborn led AA in assists (4.80 apg) and was second in steals (3.15 spg) and was named the state-tournament MVP. ... Peterson begins his fifth season at Helena and is 51-74 overall.

Helena Capital Bruins

Head coach: Bill Pilgeram

2016-17 record: 14-9

Starters returning: Taylor Sullivan, Sr.; Sydney Sheridan, Jr.; Katie Culver, Sr.; Megan Lindbo, Jr.; Kacie Gross, Sr.

Other key players: Cassie Brisko, Jr.; Mashayla O'Malley, So.; McKinlee Mihelish, So.; Madi McMahon, Sr.; Ayanna Syvrud, Sr.; Aryanna Ridlon, So.; Emily Kidder, Jr.; Dani Bartsch, Fr.; Paige Bartsch, Fr.; Nicole Ames, Jr.

Coach says: "This is one of the most experienced teams that I have had at Capital. We return all five starters from last year and two more letterwinners who gained valuable varsity time last season. This experience should lead to a very mature, balanced team. We have already been able to do more in practice and are way ahead of where we usually are at this point."

Etc: Sullivan was all-state last season, averaging 11.1 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Sheridan was all-conference last season. ... In 11 seasons as the Capital girls coach, Pilgeram is 166-83, winning a Class AA title in 2015. Overall, Pilgeram begins his 20th season at Capital. He coached by boys for eight years, compiling a 95-75 record.

Kalispell Flathead Bravettes

Head coach: Tricia Dean

2016-17 record: 10-11

Starters returning: Clara Vandenbosch; Taylor Henley; Averie Olson; Sadie Wilson

Coach says: ""Our biggest struggle will come from returning only one starter. Hopefully, our learning curve for our younger girls will be quick and they can adapt to playing varsity level basketball."

Missoula Hellgate Knights

Head coach: Rob Henthorn

2016-17 record: 8-14

Starters returning: Kylie Lunday, Shay Evans

Coach says: "The girls have been working hard in the off season in preparation for this season. Our focus for this season is playing as a team, and giving 110 percent at every practice and game. As a whole, the team is inexperienced at the varsity level since we graduated seven seniors last season."

Etc: Henthorn is 20-23 in two seasons at Hellgate. 

Missoula Sentinel Spartans

Head coach: Karen Deden

2016-17 record: 21-2

Starters returning: Kylie Frohlich, All State, All Conference; Jordyn Schweyen, All State, All conference; Lexi Deden, All Conference; Emma Blakely, honorable mention all conference, Shelby Schweyen.

Other key players: NA

Coach says: "We return a veteran team with a lot of experience. Our depth is our strength."

Etc: Frohlich averaged 10.0 ppg and led Class AA in rebounds, averaging 9.5 per game. ... J. Schweyen led the Spartans by averaging 10.4 ppg. ... Deden is in her 18th season as the Spartans coach. ... Sentinel lost to Helena 46-41 in last year's Class AA state championship game.
