Malta coaching great Fried dies at 72

MALTA – Del Fried, who won more than 500 games in his Montana high school basketball coaching career, passed way on Tuesday following a massive heart attack at his home.

He was 72.

In 20 seasons coaching the Malta girls’ basketball team, Fried went 401-106, winning six State B championships along the way. Counting 112 wins with the Brady Bulldogs, Fried finished a 513-172 career when he retired following the M’ettes’ championship season of 2000.

He was coach of the year in 1995, ’96, ’97, ’99 and 2000. Six of his players went on to play NCAA Division I basketball at the University of Montana.
