KALISPELL -- The Kalispell swimming invitational was essentially a race for second place on Saturday with the Missoula Hellgate boys and girls running away with the team titles at the Summit pool.
But it was a photo finish for silver.
The Missoula Sentinel girls claimed second place overall with 322 points, edging Kalispell Glacier at 308. On the boys' side, Glacier captured a one-point, 235-234, win over Whitefish.
Caroline McCormick had the highest finish of any Spartan girl. She took second in the 100-yard freestyle, 1.5 seconds off Kelsey Ammons' pace in the lead lane. McCormick also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.
Anthony Clason scored a second place finish for the Glacier boys in the 100-yard breaststroke and Nate Burnham was the runner-up in two races, too. He finished second in both the 50- and 500-yard freestyle. Columbia Falls' Colton Babcock held the advantage over Burnham in both races.
Then there was Hellgate.
The Knights won all but five of the 23 events. Cale and Katharine Berkoff were two-time individual winners. The brother and sister duo both won the 100-yard back strokes, and Katharine won the 200 free at 1:58.89. Cale clocked in first in the butterfly at 54.79.
Hellgate's Mari Aoki finished first in the girls' 200-yard IM, as did Missoula Big Sky's Adam Zimmer in the boys' race. Aoki finished third overall in the mixed 500-yard freestyle.
