WHITEFISH — Senior Sara Knapp led the Missoula Lady Bruins U19 Hockey Team to a 4-3 win over Bozeman Sunday morning in Whitefish with two goals. It was the season opening weekend for the defending state championship team.
Bozeman got off to a quick start with two goals in the first period before junior Sid Triepke slapped a back shot for Missoula’s first goal. Missoula freshman Francis Carasco tied the game at 2-2 with two minutes left in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Knapp scored back-to-back goals in the third period to give Missoula the 4-3 win.
Bozeman senior goalie Emily Gilmore had 51 saves, while Missoula goalie Natalie Herr had 12. Herr, a freshman at Missoula Big Sky, saw just her fifth and sixth games in goal, stepping up from the girls' U14 team in the absence of starting keeper Aubrey McKay, who is out with a knee injury.
Missoula opened the season with a 3-3 tie with Flathead on Saturday. Flathead’s Aaris Hill led her team with two goals. Missoula got goals from Knapp, Triepke and sophomore Madi Heggen.
The Missoula Lady Bruins are scheduled to play next at the Bozeman Winter Cup Dec. 1-3.
