HELENA -- Too bad there aren’t mulligans in baseball.
The Helena Brewers beat the Missoula Osprey 9-5 Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field thanks mostly to a six-run first inning. A leadoff home run from Dallas Carrol and a three-run homer from Yerald Martinez put the Brewers up 4-0. Antonio Pinero doubled home a couple more before the inning finally came to a close.
It was a long inning and short day for Missoula starter Franklyn Soriano, who left with two outs in the first inning. He officially gave up all six of the inning’s runs, two of them unearned. A two-out error from Joey Rose and Helena’s fourth base hit marked the end of the line for Soriano, who struck out one and allowed one walk.
From there, it was tough for the Missoula bats to catch up.
The Brewers tacked on one run in the second, fourth and eighth to lock up the win.
A fourth-inning solo homer from Jose Araujo gave the Osprey their first run. Rose connected on a two-run homer in the fifth to make up for his earlier error. Missoula rallied for two more in the ninth, but that’s as close as they would get.
The Missoula bullpen proved to be the silver lining at the end of the day. The O’s brought three relievers – Williams Durruthy, Yeison Santana and James Johnson -- to eat crucial innings. The Missoula bullpen collectively allowed three runs and struck out six through 8.2 innings.
The Osprey have Tuesday off as they make their way to Ogden, Utah, to take on the Raptors on Wednesday night at Lindquist Field. The Osprey don’t return to Missoula until July 20 for a series against the Raptors.
