Missoulian Softball roundup
FRENCHTOWN - Senior Kayla Brosious continued her hitting tear, helping lift Frenchtown to a 5-1 win over Florence Friday night in a rematch of last year's Class B-C state softball championship game.
Brosious, who entered the game hitting .545, finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Her double in the third scored Christy Lefler and erased an early 1-0 deficit. From there, pitcher Jessie Williams took over.
The senior was backed up by a flawless defense and closed with five scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 on the year. She recorded seven strikeouts and two walks. Florence pitcher Tawnya Vernon started strong but was bothered late by a blister on her throwing hand, Frenchtown coach Mark McMurray said.
"Tawnya pitched very well. She had a good drop ball going and a good change-up. We struggled early," he said. "(Tawnya's finger) was OK at the start of the game but the blister was back by the end."
The top of the order for Frenchtown combined to go 7-for-15 with four RBIs and delivered the final blow in the fifth inning.
Lefler led off with a single and scored on a double by Williams. Brosious' RBI single brought in Williams, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dulcie Gillette. Brianne Tweedy followed with an RBI single to score Brosious as the Broncs opened up a 4-1 advantage. Their final run came in the next inning.
"The top of the order really hung in there for us and got some hits," McMurray said.
