This week in government

The biggest government activity in Missoula takes place in East Missoula mailboxes this week, as residents there vote whether to create a public sewer district for their community.

The East Missoula Sewer District mail ballots are due Tuesday at the Missoula County Elections Office by 8 p.m. A "yes" vote would approve sale of $3.2 million in bonds for construction of a public sewer line from Missoula's main system, through the Hellgate Canyon to East Missoula. The East Missoula County Sewer District has also won other funding and grants to help low- and moderate-income residents connect to the sewer if it is built.

The total project cost is expected to be $5.8 million. East Missoula residents now use private septic or cesspool treatment systems for their wastewater. These systems are suspected of adding pollution to the valley's underground aquifer and the Clark Fork River.

The Missoula City Council has no final decisions or public hearings scheduled for its Monday meeting. Its consent agenda, which covers noncontroversial items, includes approvals of community development block grants for the Partners in Home Care and Montana Asian-American Center, a loan agreement with eLocal.com, and a resolution of support for the Missoula County noxious weeds mill levy.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 435 Ryman St.

Missoula In Motion will meet Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the City Hall conference room seeking public ideas to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve air pollution. For more information, call Transportation Planner Kelly Segars at 523-4931.

The Missoula County commissioners are skipping their Wednesday public meeting because two members are out of town that day.

In Neighborhood Council activity, the Northside/Westside Neighborhood Council meets Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Whittier School. Franklin-to-the-Fort Neighborhood Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Franklin School. And the Farviews-Pattee Canyon Neighborhood Council meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Lewis and Clark School Cafeteria.
