“The Zoomable Universe: An Epic Tour Through Cosmic Scale, from Almost Everything to Nearly Nothing” By Caleb Scharf, illustrated by Ron Miller (Scientific American/Farrar, Strauss & Giroux 2017) Call Number: New Books 523.1 SCHARF

Have you ever looked up into the night sky and wondered how far away the stars were? This book has the answer to that question and many more.

Caleb Scharf, director of the Columbia Astrobiology Center, takes the reader on an incredible journey from the farthest known reaches of space to the infinitesimally small particles that make up everything in the universe, including human beings. The author makes the mind-boggling distances involved more accessible with the brilliantly simple expedient of presenting them by powers of ten. Hugo Award-winning artist Ron Miller brings the scale of “The Zoomable Universe” into focus with over 100 original illustrations and infographics.

From the hearts of exploding stars light years beyond our vision to the microscopic worlds that exist within our own bodies, this book stunningly illuminates both outer and inner space.
