The University of Montana, and indeed all of Missoula, are primed for the big thaw.
And so comes “Spring Thaw,” a monthlong celebration hosted by UM’s Entertainment Management Program.
The events kick off with free film screenings of the rock documentary “Rock Prophecies” on April 6-8 and a concert by guitar prodigy Tyler Bryant on April 11.
Other events include “Rave On: The Buddy Holly Experience” on April 18 in the University Theater, Casino Night on May 2 at The Broadway Hotel and Conference Center, and the culminating Oval Festival on May 7.
At each event, there will be raffles to win prizes – trips to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, tickets to the Kings of Leon concert, and passes to the Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge. Proceeds from the raffle benefit UMEM, the School of Visual and Performing Arts and local charities.
“Rock Prophecies” will show at the Roxy Theater on April 6-7 at 7:30 p.m. and April 8 at 8:30 p.m. “Rock Prophecies” follows the career of rock photographer Robert Knight, who photographed Jimi Hendrix before he was famous, and Stevie Ray Vaughn’s last concert.
Tickets to Bryant’s concert on April 11 at the UC Ballroom are available at the Source at the UC and at Rockin Rudy’s. Also during the week, Robert Knight will be signing his new book, “Rock Gods,” at the University Bookstore on April 9 from noon to 1 p.m.
UM Productions will present “Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience” on April 18 at the University Theater. Tickets for this show are available at all Griz Tix location or may be purchased by phone at 243-4051 or toll-free at
1-888-MONTANA, or online at www.griztix.com. Ticket Packages are $72 for students and $97 for the general public. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Casino Night will be May 2 at The Broadway Hotel and Conference Center. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and cards will be dealt at 2 p.m. There is a $100 buy-in with $50 re-buys.
Spring Thaw concludes with the Oval Festival on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival includes live music by Greenstar, bouncy slides, and a new attraction – the “If They Mated Mirror” made famous by Conan O’Brien.
There will also be a dunk tank, providing students with a chance to dunk some of UM’s finest teachers and administrators.
