HELENA - A Montana State Prison inmate who escaped after stealing a prison dump truck Friday afternoon was picked up Monday night not far from the prison.
David W. Grant was arrested by prison officials at 8:10 p.m., said Ellen Bush, public information officer for the Department of Corrections in Helena.
Bush said someone called the prison ranch to report a person in dark clothing walking along Racetrack Creek about a mile east of the Racetrack Campground, in an area 12 miles from the prison.
The prison dispatched a lieutenant and an officer, with backup from Powell and Deer Lodge county officials.
"He took off running once he saw they were after him, but the officers were able to catch up with him," Bush said.
He was not armed, but had a small pocketknife with him, she said.
Grant, 51, was returned to the prison and is expected to appear in court on the escape charges Tuesday.
