Missoulian Softball roundup

Julie Swehla hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Helena Capital made it stand up for a 7-1 win over Missoula Hellgate in the Western AA Conference opener for both teams Friday at McCormick Park.

Sheena Nelson scattered seven hits to pick up the win on the mound for Capital, allowing only a single run in the sixth inning.

Natasha Coulston gave up all seven runs in five innings of work and was tagged with the loss for the Knights.

Karin Gorseth had three of Hellgate's seven hits while Molly Hays had a pair of safeties and an RBI.

Liz Meyer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Capital while Nelson had three hits in four trips.

Hellgate plays host to Helena Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

€ Broncs sweep Devils

At Corvallis, Hamilton pitcher Melissa Weston picked up a pair of wins in the Broncs' Central A doubleheader sweep of Corvallis Friday afternoon.

The sophomore shut down Corvallis' bats, giving up only four hits in the Broncs' 6-1 win in the first game and came back to pick up another win in Hamilton's 8-7 win in the second game.

In the first game, Weston went the full seven innings, walking none and striking out 11. Sarah Fraser went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Karly Manning was 2-for-3 with one RBI for Hamilton. Kristine Campbell got two of Corvallis' four hits.

In the second game, Weston again went the diustance but needed a key strike out in the bottom of the sixth with two outs to preserve the victory. Hamilton (2-0, 3-1) had an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The Blue Devils scored three runs and had the tying and go-ahead run on base before Weston got the strikeout.

Kristin Hansen went 3-for-4 to lead Hamilton and Manning was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Heather Ruhnke had a two-run home run for Corvallis (0-2, 0-4).

At Columbia Falls, Chelsi Howe knocked in a pair of runs in a three-run second inning to lift Whitefish to the Western A win over Columbia Falls in the season-opener for both teams.

Howe's single scored Shannon Wagner and Tiffany Foster.

Jenny Bissell pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the Bulldogs to pick up the win.

Columbia Falls plays at Libby Saturday at noon. Whitefish is off until next Saturday when it travels to Polson for a doubleheader.
