Missoula Hellgate scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 10-9 victory over Butte, snapping a long losing streak against the Bulldogs in girls' softball action Thursday at blustery McCormick Park.

Butte's Rachel Worrell walked freshman Mandy Hays with the bases loaded, scoring freshman Ellen Buchman to tie the game at 9-9. Karin Gorseth followed with the game-winning single, scoring Molly Hays.

It was Hellgate's first win over the state runner-up Bulldogs since 1994.

Hellgate improved to 2-1 in Western AA play. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-1.

"It's a big win," said Hellgate coach Eric Hays. "It's exciting that we battled back from being down 4-1 and 9-8. We're hitting the ball much better."

Hellgate senior Natasha Coulston pitched the first five innings, allowing just two hits - both home runs. Butte's Krissy Ueland hit a three-run homer in the third and Callie Daly hit a solo homer in the same inning.

Molly Hays pitched the final two innings, earning her first varsity win.

Hellgate took a 7-4 lead with a six-run fourth inning. Karin Gorseth, who went 3-for-5 hit a bases-loaded single that cleared the bases to highlight the inning.

€ Corvallis sweeps Ronan

At Corvallis, the Corvallis Blue Devils, losers of their first four games of the season, notched their first two wins of the season, downing Ronan in a Central A doubleheader.

Corvallis committed five errors in the opener, but won 10-5. The Blue Devils followed with an 11-5 win in the second game.

In the opener, catcher Kasey Smith went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the first inning. Chanel Evanoff, Nicole Murray and Krista Bandy also had RBIs for the Blue Devils. Evanoff struck out five and walked six, earning her first win of the season.

Catcher Abby Olsson went 3-for-4 for Ronan (1-4).

In the second game, Heather Ruhnke went 2-for-2 and had a two-run double in the Blue Devils' five-run first inning. Kristine Campbell also had a two-run double in the frame.

Sophomore Erin Jarvis, who pitched the final three innings of the first game, started the second game and notched her first varsity win. She struck out three in three innings of work. Evanoff came on in the fourth and struck out six.

At Hamilton, the Broncs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the Central A game, then won it with another run in the eighth.

Stevensville (0-3) jumped on top with a three-run first inning. Three walks fueled the rally, which included run-scoring ground outs by Megan Pfau and Lacey Knudsen.

Melissa Weston's RBI single in the seventh scored Krystal Peterson to send the game to extra frames.

Stevi put runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the eighth, but Weston, who improved to 4-1, fanned the next three batters to quell the threat.

Ashley Dutton, aboard with a walk, came around to score the winning run on a passed ball for the Broncs (4-1) in the bottom of the inning.

Hamilton second baseman Sarah Fraser broke her wrist while diving for a ball in the first inning.

€ T. Falls sweeps

At St. Ignatius, Thompson Falls took advantage of eight errors by St. Ignatius as the Bluehawks swept a Class B-C doubleheader on a blustery day that saw both snow and sunshine in the Mission Valley. Thompson Falls won the opener 4-3 and the second game 14-2.

The Bulldogs nearly survived their five errors in the opening game, but ultimately came up one run short. Jamie Kuzma led the way despite not getting a hit. She went 0-for-3 but had a pair of RBIs for Thompson Falls, which held off three Bulldog runs in the final three innings for the win.

In the second game, the top of order for Thompson Falls did in St. Ignatius. The Bluehawks' first four hitters combined to go 11-for-15 with one double and 11 RBIs. Bethany Thompson did the most damage, going 3-for-3 with five RBIs.

The Bluehawks (3-1) pounded out 13 hits in the second game to five by St. Ignatius. Of the Bulldogs' nine hits on the afternoon, Bobbi Finley had three of them. The senior went 3-for-5 to lead St. Ignatius (2-3).
