The cost of U.S. Forest Service maps will rise from $10 to $14 on Jan. 1, 2018.

The cost of getting outdoors goes up a bit in 2018.

For the first time in a decade, the U.S. Forest Service has increased its prices for national forest maps. The waterproof topographical maps change from $10 to $14 on Jan. 1.

Some limited maps, such as those showing motor vehicle use areas, remain free. Digital maps of national forests can also be found online and work with mobile devices. They cost $4.99 per side:

Missoula-based Cairn Cartographics has added a Glacier-Waterton national park map to its shelf in 2017. The trans-border map also includes the Akamina-Kishnina Provincial Park in British Columbia. It lists mileage between major landmarks and has campsites labeled with the NPS 3-letter abbreviation code helpful for making backcountry reservations. It sells for $15.95 in stores or online.

One thing that won’t cost as much is a visit to a Canadian national park, if you get your pass before the end of 2017. A Parks Canada annual pass with access to 80 national parks regularly costs $136.40 (Canadian dollars) but is available at a 20 percent discount through Dec. 31:

In the United States, a one-year annual pass to the entire National Parks system costs $80. It’s free to U.S. military members with a Common Access Card or military identification card. That could be a great deal if proposed individual park entrance fee hikes take place.

Incidentally, senior citizens who failed to grab their free or $10 Golden Age Pass now have the option of a $80 Lifetime Senior Pass or a $20 Annual Senior Pass.

Glacier National Park’s current entry fee is $30 per car for seven days, or $15 per person for those on foot, bike or bus. The annual Glacier-only access pass costs $50. The Interior Department has proposed increasing car entry fees at Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, as well as 15 other national parks to $70. That decision hasn’t been finalized yet.
